The Subjective Side of Politics

by Margo Adair & Sharon Howell

For the first time in history, the future of life itself is in question. Modern society has become lethal; it is eating away at the future. We have poisoned the land, air and water, and now, they are posining us. Our children, sensing no place for themselves, are killing one another. To survive, to heal the future means rebuilding communities that are life-affirming. This depends on our ability to break our of the cultureal patterns of domination and submission which are so ordinary to us and at the root of destruction. these patterns can be shattered as we make their hold on us visible, freeing us to create new principles and values to guide our lives.
The process of building relationships across our differences begins with our willingness to look at power, not only asit resides in our institutions and political processes, but as it lives within each of us, blocking our vision and paralyzing our creativity. Power, the ability to do, to make, to create, has become distorted in our society because it is the means of protecting the privileges of the few, gained at the expense of the earth and her people. Power means dealing with force and control.
